[Adhyāya 1] The draft edition of this adhyāya is a lightly-edited duplicate of MS Kathmandu NAK 5-333 (H), waiting to be edited. MS Kathmandu KL 699 (K) is a witness only for 3.1.1 below. MS Kathmandu NAK 1-1079 (N) is a witness only up to 3.2.35. athātaḥ sarvvabhūtacintāṃ śārīraṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ || sarvvabhūtānāṅ kāraṇam akāraṇaṃ sattvarajastamo lakṣaṇam aṣṭarūpam akhilasyāsya jagataḥ saṃbhavahetur avyaktan nāma | tad ekam anekeṣāṃ kṣetrajñānām adhiṣṭhānaṃ samudra ivodakaukasāṃ bhāvānām || Witnesses N and H read samudra ivodakaujasāṃ bhāvānām, which is linguistically and semantically implausible. It might mean "like the ocean is a support for creatures that take their strength (ojas) from water." But the simile and the language remain obscure and unlikely. Philipp Maas has suggested the minimal emendation to ivodakaukasāṃ which is compelling semantically and palaeographically. It is hard to make grammatical or semantic sense of the Nepalese readings svaṃ svaṃ svaiṣām (or ścaiṣām or scaiṣām). Perhaps the original reading dhibhūtam was first mistaken to be vibhūtam. This is a plausible error since dhi and vi are similar in early Nepalese orthography. Subsequently, a scribe might have normalized vibhūtam to vibhutvam in order to make sense in the light of the following list of deities. If these conjectures are correct, these changes must have happened very early in the transmission, in an ancestor manuscript of both witnesses K and H. The word vibhutva occurs in Sāṅkhyakārikā 42, although in a quite different context. Parallel to the homologies described in Mahābhārata 14.42.27–40, which relate ontological triples. The tu is awkward. Witnesses N and H have daṇḍas after the tu. tatra sarvva evācetanaḥ eṣa varggaḥ | puruṣaś ca pañcaviṃśatitamaś cetayitā | sa tu karaṇakāryasaṃprayuktaḥ | saty apy acaitanye pradhānasya puruṣakaivalyārthām pravṛttim upadiśanti | kṣīrādīṃś cātra hetūn udāharanti || It is tempting to emend varga to sarga ``the emitted creation,'' given the use of the term in Sāṅkhyakārikā 24 et passim. However, the vulgate text and Ḍalhaṇa's commentary unanimously read varga. ata ūrdhvam prakṛtipuruṣayoḥ sādharmmyavaidharmmye vyākhyāsyāmaḥ || ubhāv apy anādī ubhāv apy anantau | ubhāv api nityau | ubhāv apy aparau ubhāv apy aliṅgau ubhau ca sarvvagatāv iti || ekā tu prakṛtir acetanā triguṇā bījadharmmiṇī prasavadharmminī amadhyasthadharmmiṇī ceti | bahavas tu puruṣāś cetanāvantaḥ | aguṇā abījadharmmiṇo 'prasavadharmmiṇo madhyasthadharmmiṇaś ceti | It is unexpected to assert, as the Nepalese witnesses do, that Puruṣa and Prakṛti are impermanent. Perhaps at an earlier point in the text's transmission, a scribe improperly repeated the initial alpha-privative that is used in every other qualifier in the list. This emendation is influenced by the very similar wording of Mahābhārata Śāntiparvan 210.8ab: ubhau nityau .... (see note on testimonia). Note also that the sequence of qualifiers in the Nepalese manuscripts is different than the vulgate: anitya-apara-aliṅga rather than aliṅga-nitya-anapara. Note the sandhi hiatus, -dharmiṇī - amadhya- The daṇḍa here breaks the sentence but disambiguates the sandhi. Cf. Mahābhārata Śāntiparvan 210.7cd-8ab: anādyantāv ubhāv etāv aliṅgau cāpy ubhāv api // 7 ubhau nityau sūkṣmatarau mahadbhyaś ca mahattarau /. tatra kāraṇānurūpaṃ kāryam iti kṛtvā sarvva evaite ca viśeṣāḥ sattvarajastamomayā bhavanti | tadañjanatvāt tanmayatvāc ca tadguṇa eva puruṣo bhavatīty eke bhāṣante | vaidike tu || svabhāvo niyatiḥ kālaḥ pariṇāmas tatheśvaraḥ | yadṛccheti ca manyante prakṛtim pṛthudarśiṇaḥ || We read vaidike with witness N, against H and the vulgate, because lectio dificilior potior; see further discussion in the translation. tato jātāni bhūtāni tadguṇāny eva nirddiśet | tebhyas tallakṣaṇaḥ kṛtsno bhūtagrāmaḥ prajāyate || According to Ḍalhaṇa (1938: 341), Gayadāsa also read tato jātāni, with the Nepalese version and against the vulgate. tasyopayogo 'bhihitaś cikitsām prati sarvvadā | bhūtebhyo 'pi paran tasmān nāsti cintā cikitsite || yato 'bhihitaṃ tatsambhavadravyasamūho bhūtādir ukta iti | bhautikāni cendriyāṇy āyurvvede varṇṇyante tathaivendriyārthāḥ || The passage referred to is Suśrutasaṃhitā, sūtrasthāna 1.38. bhavati cātra || indriyair indriyārthaṃ tu svaṃ svaṃ gṛhṇāti mānavaḥ | niyataṃ tulyayonitvān nānyenānyam iti sthitiḥ || na cāyurvvedaśāstreṣūpadiśyante sarvvagatāḥ kṣetrajñā nityāś ca | asarvvagateṣu ca kṣetrajñeṣu nityeṣu ca puruṣākhyāpakān hetūn udāharanti āyurvvedasiddhāntāt| asarvvagatāḥ kṣetrajñā nityāś ca tiryagyonimānuṣadeveṣu ca sañcaranti dharmmādharmmanimittaṃ | ta ete 'numānagrāhyāś carāḥ paramasūkṣmāś cetanāvantaḥ śāśvatāḥ śukrārttavayoḥ sannipāteṣv abhivyajyante | yato 'bhihitam pañcamahābhūtaśarīrisamavāyaḥ puruṣa iti | sa khalv eṣa karmmapuruṣaś cikitsāyām adhikṛtaḥ | We emend against the reading kṣetrajñeṣv anityeṣu of witnesses N and H, for the logic of the passage and following the vulgate. The character ṣva is clear in both N and H, but a copying error from -ṣu is not inconceivable. We emend to -śarīri- against N and H, for sense and because this is a quotation from Suśrutasaṃhitā 1.1.22. The ca after tiryagyonimānuṣadeveṣu unnecessarily conjoins the members of the dvandva. While rare, this usage has been observed: Wackernagel 1896--1964, II.1, para 70. [Adhyāya 2] athātaḥ śukraśoṇitaviśuddhiṃ śārīraṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ || Witness N omits śārīraṃ, which offers a clearer syntax. Note that the 1931 and 1938 editions of the vulgate text offer two different solutions to the awkward phrase. vāta pitta śleṣma śoṇita kuṇapa granthi pūti pūya kṣīṇa mūtra purīṣa retāṃsi prajotpādaneṣv asamarthāni bhavanti | The 1931 and 1938 editions of the SS by Ācārya have different readings at this point. śonita is included in the 1931 edition but omitted in the 1938 edition. The vulgate adds a half-śloka snigdhaṃ vāntaṃ ... that is not present in the Nepalese version. The Nepalese version then has about eleven passages that are absent in the vulgate. The vulgate's verses 3.2.11cd then appears after 3.2.32. snehādīnāṃ kramaṃ kuryāt ṣaṭsv eteṣu paṇḍitaḥ || Although not printed in the vulgate editions, the editor Y. T. Witness H has a scribal correction of the vowel i. The reading adopted here, with a feminine sentence subject, is neither the Nepalese nor the vulgate and is almost certainly unoriginal. enāṃ praveśayet | praśaste tithyādau | tatreṣṭāgāraṃ brāhmaṇakṣattriyavaiśyaśūdrāṇāṃ śvetaraktakṛṣṇeṣu bhūmipradeśeṣu | vilvanyagrodhatindukanirmmitaṃ sarvvāgāran tat mayañ ca paryavanaddhaṃ samupaliptabhittiparicchadaṃ prāgdvāram udagdvāram vāṣṭahastāyata caturhastavistṛtaṃ rakṣāmaṅgalasampannam vidheyaṃ | tatropasthitaprasavāyāḥ kaṭīpṛṣṭhaṃ pratisamantād vedanā bhavati | mūtramabhīkṣṇam prasicyate | yonimukhāc ca śleṣmā prajāyiṣyamāṇāṃ tusvabhyaktām uṣṇodakapariṣiktagātrīṅ kṛtamaṅgalāmathenāṃ sa ghṛtāṃ yavāgūṃ kaṇṭhāt pītavatī mṛduni kṛtopadhānavistīrṇṇe śayane sthitāmābhugnasakthinīmuttānām aśaṅkanīyās tisraś catasraḥ pariṇatavayasaḥ | vrajananakuśalāḥ kalpitanakhyaḥ paricareyuriti || athāsyā viśikhāntaram anulomāyām anusukham abhyañjyāt | brūyāc cainām etāḥ subhage pravāhayaś ceti | mā cāprāptāvīḥ pravāhiṣṭhāḥ | anāgatā svāviṣu pravāhamāṇāḥ | badhiraṃ mūkaṃ srastahanuṃ mūrddhābhighātinaṃ kāsaśvāsaśoṣopadrutaṃ kuvjaṃ vikaṭam vā janayati |tasmād anāgatāvī na pravāheta | sraste tu kukṣau vimukte garbhanāḍī pravandhe samūle śroṇīvaṃkṣaṇabastiśiraḥ supravāheta śanaiḥ śanais tato garbhayonimukhaṃ prapannagāḍhataram āviśalyabhāvāt | tatra pratilomam anupānaṃ pāyayet śosayet | jātasyolbaṃ viśodhyāsyaṃ saindhavasarppiṣāṣṭāṅgulāvaśeṣāṃ nāḍīm baddhayitvā kuṣṭhatailenābhyajya sūtreṇābaddhya kumārasya grīvāyām vadhnīyāt | atha kumāraṃ śītābhir adbhir āśvāsya jātakarmmaṇi madhusarppiranantāmiśraṃ vrahmīrasena suvarṇṇamaṅgulyā nāsikayā lehayet | sūtikāñ ca ghṛtatailayor anyatarasya mātrāṃ pipalyādi kaṣāyam anupānam pāyayet | valavatīm avalāṃ yavāgūn trirātram pañcarātram vā || ata ūrddhvaṃ snigdhenānnasaṃsarggeṇopacaret snehanity ā ca syāt | prāyaś cainām prabhūtenoṣṇodakena pariṣiñcet krodhāyāsamaithunādīṃś ca pariharet || bhavati cātra || mithyācārāt sūtikāyā yo vyādhir upajāyate | sa kṛcchrasādhyo 'sādhyo vā bhaved dhātvapakarṣarṇāt || tasmāt tāṃ deśakālau tu vyādhisātmyena karmmaṇā | parīkṣyopacaren nityam evaṃ nātyayam āpnuyāt || athāmarāmapatantīm pātayet kaṇṭham asyāḥkeśaveṣṭitayāṅgulyā pramṛśet kaṭukā lāvukṛtavedhanasarṣapasarppanirmmocakair vvā kuṭatailair yonim udrūpayet | lāṅgalakīmūlakalkena vāsyāḥ pāṇipādatalam ālimpet | kuṣṭhalāṅgalakīmūlakalkam vā madyamūtrayor anyatareṇa pāyayet | śālimūlakalkam vā 'pi ppalyādikalkam vā madyena | siddhārthakakuṣṭhailālāṅgalakīmahāvṛkṣakṣīrasurāmaṇḍairāsthāpayet | etaiṣveva ca siddhena siddhārthakatailenottaracūrṇṇabastiś cāsyai dadyāt | hastena cāpaharet | prajātāyās tu bastiśirodarayoniśūlaṃ raktaṃ saṃruddhya vāyuḥ karoti sa makkalaḥ | tatra yavakṣāracūrṇṇaṃ sarppiṣā sukhodakena pāyayet || lavaṇacūrṇṇam vā surāmaṇḍena | purāṇaguḍam vā trikaṭuka trijātakakustumburumiśram vā khādayet | pṛthakparṇṇyādikvāthaṃ bhadradārumaricavacāsaṃsṛṣṭam pāyayet | atha bālaṃ kṣaumaparihitaṃ kṣaumakārppāsās tṛtāyāṃ śāyayīta | nimba pīlu paruṣaka śākhābhiś cainaṃ parivījayet | mūrddhni cāsya tailapicum avatārayet | dhūpayec cainaṃ rakṣoghnair dhūpaiḥ | rakṣoghnāni cāsya pāṇipādaśirogrīvāsv avasujet | tilātasīsarṣapakaṇāś cātra prakiret | adhiṣṭhāne cāgnim prajvālayet | vraṇitopāsanīyañ cāvekṣyeta tato daśamyāṃ mātāpitarau kṛtamaṅgalakautukau svastivācakapūrvvakaṃ nāma kuryāt āṃ | yathābhipretaṃ nakṣatran nāma vā | tato yathāvarṇṇaṃ dhātrīm upasthāpayet | kṛṣāmasthūlām vayaḥsthāmam avyādhitām prasannakṣīrāmavalamvorddhastanīm avyaṅgām avyasanaṃ nījīvavatsāṃvatsalāṃ dogdhīm akṣudrāṃkule jātamato bhūyiṣṭaiś ca guṇair anvitām ārogyavalavṛddhaye kumārasya | tatrātikṛṣātisthūlāninditā vyādhitāś ca vyākhyātās tāviṣamadhātutvād rogān āpādayanti bālasya viśeṣataḥ | ūrdhvastanī karālaṃ kumāraṃ kuryāl lamvastanī nāsikāmukhaṃ cchādayitvā maraṇam āpādayanti | atha praśastāṃ śirasnātā mahadvāsasām udaṅmukhīm upaveśya dakṣiṇaṃ stanaṃ kumāraṃ pūrvvam pāyayet || anena mantreṇābhimantrya || catvāraḥ sāgarāḥ puṇyāḥ stanānāṃ kṣīravāhināṃ | santu te śubhage nityaṃ bālasyānuvalapradāḥ | piben bālo 'mṛtarasaṃ payas tava śubhānane | dīrgham āyur avāpnotu devāḥ prāśyāmṛtaṃ yathā || athāsyāḥ kṣīrasañjananārthaṃ yavagodhūmaśāliṣaṣṭikamāṃsakṣīrasurāsauvīrapiṇyāka rasonamatsyakaśerukāśṛṅgāṭakavidārīkandaśatāvarīviśamṛṇālanālikālāvukālaśākaprabhṛtīni vidadhyāt | atha tasyāḥ stanyam apsu parīkṣeta tac cec chītalam amalaṃ tanuṃ śaṃkhāvabhāsaṃ apsu caikībhāvaṃ gacchaty aphenilaṃ matraṇḍulaṃ na plavate sīdati vā tac chuddham iti vindyāt | tena kumārasyārogyaṃ bhavati || bhavati cātra || dhātryās tu gurubhir bhojyair vviṣalais tathā | doṣā dehe prakupyanti tata stanyam praduṣyati || duṣṭaṃ prāguktan tena śarīrāvyādhayaḥ prādur bhavanti | teṣu ca yathābhihitaṃ mṛdvacchedanīyam auṣadham mātrayā kṣīrasya kṣīrasarppiḥ saṃyuktaṃ vidadhyāt | dhātryāś ca kevalaṃ | kṣīrānnād asya kalkī kṛtaṃ | dhātryāś ca pūrvvavat | annād asya kaṣāyādīnām ātmany eva na dhātryāḥ || bālānāṃ gudapākeṣu pittaghnīṃ kārayet kriyāṃ | rasāñjanam viśeṣeṇa pānālepanayor hitaṃ || kṣīrāhārasya siddhārthakavacāpayasyāśārivāvrahmīkuṣṭhasaindhavasiddhaṃ sarppiḥ pātuṃ prayacchet | kṣīrānnād asya madhukavacātriphalāsiddhaṃ | annād asya dvipañcamūlīkṣīratagarabhadradāruviḍaṅga- drākṣādisiddhaṃ tena kumārasyārogyavalamedhāyūṃṣi bhavanti | bālaṃ punar ggātreṣu na gṛṅṇīyāt | na cainaṃ tarjjayet sahasā vā na prabodhayed vitrāsabhayāt | sahasā nāhared utkṣiped vātābhighātabhayān nopaveśayet kauvjabhayān nityaṃ cainam anuvartteta priyahitair eva m abhihitamanādyamapyabhivarddhate nityamudagrasatvasampannastv arogo bhavati || bhavati cātra || nāśucau visṛjed bālaṃ nākāse viṣameṇa ca | noṣṇamārutavarṣeṣu rajodhūmodakeṣu vā || kṣīrasātmyatayākṣīramājaṃ gavyam athāpi vā | dadyād astanyam aprāptau bālebhyo vīkṣya mātrayā || ṣaṇmāsāc cainam annam prāśayel laghuhitaṃ nityam avarodhaś ca | syāt kṛtarakṣaḥ | upasarggabhayā grahopasarggebhyo rakṣyā bālā bhavanti || atha kumāra udvijate trasyati roditi naṣṭasaṃjño bhavati || nakhadaśanair ddhātrīm ātmānañ ca paritudati dantān khādati kūjati jṛmbhate bhrūvāvutkṣipaty ūrddhvan nirīkṣate phenam udvamati sandaṣṭauṣṭhaḥ krūrabhinnārttasvaro niśi jāgartti durvvalomnāṅgo yathāpūrvvaṃ dhātryāḥ stanyan nābhilaṣatīti sāmānyaṃ grahopasṛṣṭalakṣaṇ uktaṃ | vistareṇotta re vakṣyāmaḥ || śaktimantaṃ cainaṃ jñātvā yathā svam vidyāṃ grāhayet | athāsmai pañcaviṃśativarṣāya ṣoḍaśavarṣām patnīm āvahen mitradharmmārthakāmaprajāḥ prāpsyāmīti || bhavati cātra || ūnaṣoḍaśavarṣāyām aprāptaḥ pañcaviṃśatiḥ | yady ādhatte pumān garbhaḥ kukṣisthaḥ sa vipadyate | jāto vā ni ciraṃ jīved vā durbalendriyaḥ | tatra pūrvoktaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ prapatiṣyati garbhaḥ | garbbhāśayaśroṇīvaṃkṣaṇabastiśūlāni bhavanti | raktadarśanañ ca | tāsām pariṣekāvagāhālepanair upacaret kṣīrapānaiś ca | alpālpasyandate kṣīramutpalādi siddham vā pāyayet | saṃsramāne savātapārśvaśūlānāha mūtrasaṅgāḥ sthānāt sthānaṃ cotkrāmati garbhaḥ | tatra snigdhaṃ śītāḥ kriyāḥ | vedanāyāṃ mahāsahamadhukasvadaṃṣṭrakaṇṭakārikāsiddha payaḥ | kṣaudraśarkarāmiśram pāyayet | mūtrasaṅge darbbhādisiddhaṃ | ānāhe hiṅgusauvarccalaraso na siddhaṃ sravati rakte koṣṭhāt kaṇṭakārikāmṛtpiṇḍagairikasarjjarasāñjanacūrṇṇa yathālābhaṃnyagrodhāditvakprabālakalkan vā pāyayet | utpalādikase di siddham vā | vṛhatīdvayotpalaśārivāpayasyāmadhukasiddham vā | etenopavarttate rujasu garbhaś cāpy āyyate || māsānumāsikam vyavasthivyenodumbaraśalāṭusiddhena payasā bhojayet | atīte lavaṇaṃ varjyābhir uddālukādīnāṃ pācanīyopasaṃbhṛtābhir upakrāmet yāvanto māsā garbhasya tāvantyahāni vastyudaraśūle purāṇaguḍan dīpanīyasaṃyuktam pāyayed ariṣṭam vā | vātātapaśramasevinyā vātopahīhītatvāt srotasāṃ līyate garbhaḥ sotikālam avatiṣṭhamāno vyāpadyate | tāṃ mṛdunā snehādinā krameṇopacaret | utkrosarasaṃ yavāgūñ cālpasnehām prayacchet | kālātītasthāyini garbhaviśeṣato dhānyam udūkhalamusalenābhihanyāt | viṣamam vā yānāsanam upasevet | vātābhipanna eva śuṣyati garbhaḥ samātuḥ kukṣin na pūrayati | mandaṃ spandate ca taṃ vṛṃhaṇīyaḥ payobhir mmāṃsarasaiś copacaret | śukraśoṇitaṃ vāyunoparuddham anavaktrāntajīvam ādhmāpayaty udaran tat kadācid yadṛcchayopaśāntan naigameṣā pahṛtam iti vadanti | tam eva kadācit pravilīyamānam āpūryamāṇam vā nāgodaram ity āhus tatrāpi līnavat pratikāraḥ | nivṛttaprasavāyāḥ punaḥ ṣaḍbhyo varṣebhya ūrddhvam prasavatyāḥ kumāro 'lpāyur bhavati | madhakuṃ śālibījañ ca payasyā suradāru ca | aśmantakaḥ kṛṣṇatilās tāmravallī śatāvarī || vṛkṣādanī payasyā ca latā sotpalaśārivā | anantā śārivā rāsnā padmam madhukam eva ca || vṛhatīdvayakāśmaryakṣīrīśuṅgātvaco ghṛtaṃ | pṛthakparṇṇī valā śigra śvadaṃṣṭrā madhuyaṣṭikā || śṛṅgāṭakamvisaṃ drākṣā kaseru madhukaṃ sitā | vatsaite saptayogāḥ syur arddhaślokasamāpanāḥ || yathākramaṃ prayoktavyā garbhasrāve payoyutāḥ | kapitthavilvavṛhatīpaṭolekṣunidigdhikā || mūlāni kṣīrasiddhāni pāyayed bhiṣag aṣṭame | navame madhukānantā payasyāśārivām pivet || payas tu śritaśītam praśasyate || sakṣīrā vā hitā śuṇṭhī madhukaṃ devadāru ca | evam apyāyyate garbhas tīvrā ruk copaśāmyati || atha garbbhiṇī vyādhyutpannāvātyayec charddayen madhurāmlenānnopahitena | anulomayec ca saṃśamanīyam mṛdu vidadhyāt | annapānayor iti | aśnīyāc ca mṛduvīryaṅ garbbhāviruddhāṃś ca kriyāyogān vidadhīta iti || suvarṇṇaṃ rṇṇacūsukṛdaṃ kuṣṭham madhuvacā ghṛtaṃ | matsyākṣakaḥśaṃkhapuṣpī sarppiḥ kāñcanam eva ca || arkkapuṣpī madhughṛtaṃ cūrṇṇitaṃ kanakan tathā | suvarṇṇacūrṇṇavaiḍūryaṃ svetā dūrvvā ghṛtam madhuḥ || catvāro 'bhihitāḥ prāsyā arddhaślokasamāpanāḥ | kumārāṇām vapur medhā balārogyakarāḥ śubhā iti || iti garbbhiṇīvyākaraṇaṃ śārīre daśamo 'dhyāyaḥ || o || bhūtacintā śukraśuddhiṃ garbhasaṅkramaṇan tathā | garbhavyākaraṇañ caiva kāyavyākaraṇañ ca yat || marmmasirāvibhaktiś ca sirātāḍanam eva ca | dhamanīvyākaraṇa caiva garbbhiṇyā pūryate daśa ||
